Costa Rica Fayla Tours Adds Trail-Status Checks to Guided Volcano Tours

GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA, July 28, 2026 - Costa Rica Fayla Tours, a private ground transportation and excursion operator based near Guanacaste Airport (LIR), has added a same-day trail-status verification step to its guided volcano tour program. The update requires guides to confirm current park access conditions on the morning of each departure before groups travel to Rincón de la Vieja or Miravalles, aligning tour scheduling with data from the national agencies that monitor volcanic activity in the region.

A Verification Step Built Around Existing Park Rules

Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles both operate under a two-zone access system managed by the national park authority, in which secondary craters remain open to guided hikers while primary craters stay restricted because of ongoing volcanic activity. The verification step was built around that existing framework rather than a new access system, confirming each morning that trail status has not changed before a group departs from a hotel or private residence in the area. Volcano tours run several days a week to both sites, often booked alongside airport transfers from Guanacaste in Costa Rica for guests arriving the same week as their tour date, since coordinating both bookings through one operator tends to simplify last-minute schedule changes.

Guide Training and Radio Contact

Guides assigned to volcano tours receive route-specific training and carry radios that keep them in contact with park ranger stations for the length of each hike. Every group travels with a bilingual guide rather than a general tour leader, a detail that shaped the decision to formalize the trail check as a standing procedure instead of an informal practice carried out at a guide's discretion. First aid supplies travel with every group as a standard precaution, regardless of trail conditions on a given day.

Monitoring Data Behind the Update

Rincón de la Vieja has recorded minor eruptive activity in recent years, including a notable event in 2017, and seismic and gas conditions at the volcano are tracked continuously by OVSICORI-UNA, the national volcanological and seismological observatory. According to the observatory, monitoring networks across the country's active volcanoes include dozens of seismic stations and gas-sensing instruments used to flag changes before they affect surface conditions.

The national conservation authority sets trail access decisions at both sites, SINAC, which closes sections of a route when monitoring data or ranger observations indicate a need. The verification step does not change park policy; it is designed only to reflect any change in access status before a group leaves for the trailhead.

"Our guides have always checked conditions before every trip. Making that check a documented step, tied directly to what the monitoring agencies report, gives guests a clearer picture of what a volcano tour actually involves," said Christian Roberto, Media Contact of Costa Rica Fayla Tours.

Booking Pattern Around the Change

Guanacaste airport transportation in Costa Rica is often booked alongside a volcano tour date, particularly among travelers landing at Guanacaste Airport (LIR) earlier in a multi-day stay. Guests who book an airport shuttle service in Liberia, Costa Rica, through the same operator report fewer scheduling conflicts than those coordinating transportation and tour bookings separately, since one point of contact tracks both bookings and any changes to a volcano departure time. An airport shuttle service paired with a same-week tour booking has become a common request from repeat visitors, according to internal booking data collected over the past two seasons.

Continuing the Update

The company plans to apply the same verification approach to its other day tours in the coming months, extending trial-status checks to hikes near Cabro Muco and nearby dry forest routes later this year. The same airport transfers from Guanacaste in Costa Rica used for volcano tour guests will extend to those additional excursions once the verification step is in place, alongside the existing Costa Rican airport shuttle in Guanacaste already offered for hotel pickups.

Rising Interest in Guided Nature Excursions

Guided volcano and rainforest excursions have become a larger share of day-tour bookings over the past two years, matching broader interest in structured outdoor experiences among travelers visiting the Pacific coast. Guest feedback collected after volcano tours frequently mentions the crater hike and the closing soak in the hot springs and mud baths as the parts of the day visitors remember most, a pattern reviewed internally before the verification step was introduced.
